A species of Hawaiian honeycreeper, driven to extinction due to a combination of deforestation & avian malaria - the former of which I’ve explored in this little wildlife artivism piece
I like the idea of depicting extinct species using techniques which allude to the fact they are missing from our ecosystems, and pointillism felt like a really natural way for me to do this.
Rather than doing pointillism for the forested backdrop for the honeycreeper, I chose to do fragmented lines, slightly washed out with white, reflecting the impact deforestation had on the loss of this beautiful species.
Original art: acrylic inks on 300gsm hot-pressed watercolour paper. 26cm x 18cm.
