“The Last of a Species”

The story of Kaua’i ‘ō’ō remains one of the saddest stories I’ve ever heard. It - along with the hauntingly beautiful unanswered duet of the final male of the species - live rent free in my head, and have done for several years now.

This is not the first time I’ve turned to the beautiful ‘ō’ō as a #wildlifeartivism muse, and it won’t be the last either.

This beautiful bird died alone, unable to find a female mate, and unaware he was the last of a species (and of an entire evolutionary branch).

For this piece, I wanted to involve the feeling of peeking through the undergrowth to watch the last male. His song is visible on the right, with rests showing the gaps where the female bird would have responded, had he not been alone.

I also made the bird slightly 3D, out of several layers of black paper ✨ I wanted it to feel like an alive-shadow, a ghost that could fly out the page.

These gentle marine mammals are a subspecies of the West Indian Manatee. They have a relatively broad diet, which consists of several different species of sea grass - one (halodule wrightii) which is shown here

As is the case for many endangered species, the Antillean Manatee is threatened due to human activities - primarily habitat destruction & poaching for their meat

I wanted to create a piece which explored habitat loss (the manatee in an old-school fish bowl with limited sea grass) juxtaposed with a “extra extra extra” style sale tag - raising questions like: Do species become more valuable to us when they are rarer? What about if the species is one we’ve never heard of - like the Antillean Manatee?

The tale of (making the) whale 🐋🐋🐋

From a vague idea I had in my head, to a wire frame, then well over £100 of modroc (😅🫠), inks, fabric, card, paper-mache, wrapping paper and about 50 glue gun sticks…

Our whale puppet duetted with the brilliant @natashaburrowspolefitness’s humpback whale routine in Pole to Pole 🩵

Esther said she felt like watching Tash perform was like watching the whale’s song become embodied in physical form (which I think is such a spellbinding way of describing it)

This big puppet now lives under my desk (she’s huge and I’m impressed she fitted). Reel features my dogs 🐾 cuz apparently I just hate wearing socks when the temperature is anything above 15C?????

Anyways, enjoy xx

Ps. This reel took twice as long to create as it deleted itself the first time 🫠

Addressing the 🐘 in the room.

Yes - I am worried & I am angry.

About the state of natural world & about so many people turning to use a resource which is not only contributing to environmental issues, but is also taking away work from people who genuinely need it (and would do it so, so much better!)

The arts are an inherently human thing. We have been creating arts since the Stone Age.

The creative process is an important way in which we can process our lives & the things which happen to us, as well as communicate to others in a meaningful and emotional way.

AI *can not* replace the human condition which is inherently linked with creativity. The fact that there is increasingly so much AI in the creative industry isn’t just worrying & depressing, it is utterly *soul-destroying*.

I think a mix of winter setting in, the post-show come-down, and the stress of getting enough work secured for Christmas & the new year as a freelancer >.<

POV - your entire camera roll is BTS from Pole to Pole

If I took away 3 things from Pole to Pole - the Pole dance show which was my first dive into performative #wildlifeartivism - they would be:

1. Introducing hundreds of people to a random critically endangered fungus will bring you a lot of joy! Especially when it is portrayed so beautifully by @barbie.pagoda 🩷🍄

2. The pole community is incredibly talented, endlessly supportive, and the most wonderful group of people to work with on a project that could be seen as a little risqué! This project was MADE by everyone - I cannot wait to work with them all again ✨🩵 One of my fav photos from the show is a lil pic of all the dancers watching through the stage curtain, snapped by @blue_apogee

3. Making a whale puppet takes longer than you’d think, more mod-roc than you’d expect, and results in a weird visual phenomenon whilst operating as you lose your peripheral vision and everything goes blurry (!!) 👀 but dw, if you put tape markings on the floor, you won’t crash into anything ✌🏻🐋

It’s been just over 1 week since ✨ Pole to Pole ✨, and I’ve been utterly blown away by everyone’s love for this lil project!!

It’s been a joy to take a completely new approach with my #wildlifeartivism work, and a *privilege* to work alongside so many amazing women!!

Whilst I edit the footage of everyone’s performances, and the amazing @poppyniamhphotography finishes editing our fantastic photos - here’s a wee collage of the show !! Ft. a snap of the infamous whale puppet in action in @natashaburrowspolefitness’s performance 🐋

Also! I’m so thrilled we raised £360 for @dswfwildlife to support wildlife conservation across Africa & Asia 🩵

It has been a joy (and it’s still feeling pretty surreal) to have pulled together Pole to Pole!! 🌀

My species was the male blue bird of paradise, and I choreographed a routine inspired by their courtship - with the aim of impressing @natashaburrowspolefitness, the female to my male!

The blue bird of paradise likes to spend the majority of his time upside down, wiggling away in his valiant attempt to impress the ladies. 🪶

His bright blue plumage and long black tail feathers are designed for sexual prowess. As far as the ladies are concerned, the bigger the tail, the healthier the male! 🩵

I’m slightly obsessed with these stills of Tash & I from the show - we both look so happy!! ✨

Pole to Pole is *TONIGHT*

It feels like I’ve blinked and suddenly the idea I daydreamed onto my notes app has become a reality ✨

I am *so* excited to be bringing the natural world to life using dance & movement, in a way that will pay homage to the biology & ecology of different species; whilst also showing off artistic flair! 🌀

Because, there are over 48,600 species threatened with extinction - a terrifying statistic, and one that easily can depress us into inaction.

But - every year, we discover around 18,000 new species. There is hope growing & glimmering in all of the cracks - we just have to go out and find it.

Pole to Pole is my way of exploring how we can push the boundaries of #wildlifeartivism to reach a new audience. I believe everyone has the potential to find something they love & connect with in the natural world; and that it’s about using different art & media forms to find those new connections 🫶🏻

Introducing our *final cast member*, the graceful Humpback Whale, portrayed by the utterly amazing @natashaburrowspolefitness! 🐋

Humpback whales are famous for their songs: haunting, beautiful calls that fill our oceans like orchestras. Recent studies have shown that humpbacks not only have dialects, they also structure their songs in a similar way to human language.

These intelligent mammals migrate around our oceans, with four populations around the North Pacific. They are one of our conservation success stories in Pole to Pole, with numbers slowly increasing after the international ban on whaling.

However, humpback whales - like many of our ocean creatures - are threatened by noise pollution, plastic and debris, boat collisions & entanglement with fishing gear, and ocean warming & acidification. Their conservation story is far from over.

Tash will be bringing our magnificent humpback to life for the show’s finale. Whales are Tash’s spirit animal because of their grace, strength, and fluidity - qualities she strives to embody in her pole practice. She finds they constantly inspire the way she moves and teaches.

Our penultimate cast member will be portraying another gorgeous - and still relatively unknown - invertebrate: the Syrian demoiselle. ✨

These high-speed aerial predators are members of the damselfly family, and are found around the rivers of Syria in Southern Levant.

There is very little known about these gorgeous demoiselles, other than that they are endangered, primarily threatened by habitat loss and the degradation of river ecosystems.

Our beautiful demoiselle will be danced by the wonderful @chazwiltshire1

Cha has a love for all things animal and pole, so has been incredibly excited to blend the two in her performance for Pole to Pole!

We’re down to our last three dancers (and the last day before show day!). So far, our species cast has been animal focused… but that’s about to change! Introducing… Barbie Pagoda! 🍄

You heard correctly. The Barbie Pagoda is a bright pink, frilly fungus, found in New Caledonia. It is relatively new to science, only discovered in 2011, and only grows around the roots of the oak gum tree.

I’ve been pretty obsessed with this bizarre fungus ever since I found it at the start of this year - and I’m so excited that the amazing @barbie.pagoda loves this fungus as much as me!!

Alisha will be bringing the Barbie pagoda to life with a twisty, twirling, growing (?!) routine that pays homage to the pagoda’s structure and mycelial network!!

P.s. when I saw the photo Poppy took of Alisha, I gasped out loud, as she looks like a fungal fairy princess 💕

Do you know what the smallest butterfly species in the world is? 🦋

The Sinai Blue Baton Butterfly is smaller than a fingernail, it was first discovered in 1975, and sightings of this critically endangered butterfly have been fleeting ever since.

It is restricted to Egypt’s St Katherine Protectorate within an area of just 7 square km, and depends solely on one endangered host plant, the Sinai Thyme. The butterfly - and the sinai thyme - are primarily threatened by overgrazing and overcollection.

The biggest big cat in the world is also one of the most endangered. 🐅

The incredible @amyturnstyle is transforming herself into the Amur Tiger - there are only around 300-400 left in the wild, and they are primarily found in the frozen Siberian tundra and forests.

Amur tigers have thicker fur than their tropical counterparts, and massive feet which act like snowshoes when walking through the snow that can be up to 20 inches deep!

Amy has been doing pole for almost 3 years - and wanted to push herself to do something a bit different, despite being a tiny bit afraid of heights!

Pole to Pole has been all about trying to push the boundaries of creativity in order to reach a new audience about the natural world and environmental issues.

So it felt important that I felt able to perform too!

I will be the Blue Bird of Paradise, listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List - the males have an elaborate courtship dance which involves a lot of being upside-down in the tropical forests of Papua New Guinea; and this is something I wanted to emulate in my performance!

I’ve been pole dancing for just over a year, and working on Pole to Pole since March this year. Being able to push the boundaries of my wildlife artivism work using my love of movement and dance has been such an incredible experience, and something I’m excited to do more of in the future!

My blue bird of paradise performance also features the amazing @natashaburrowspolefitness as the female bird, who I’m hoping to woo! 🩵

Pole to Pole has been all about trying to push the boundaries of creativity in order to reach a new audience about the natural world and environmental issues.

Western Parotia also dance to woo their mates, and in classic bird of paradise style, the males have an extravagant golden throat patch which they flash to impress the ladies.

The Western Parotia is currently classified as Least Concern by the IUCN red list, but the habitat in which they live is rapidly being lost due to deforestation caused by logging (legal and illegal) and increased demand for monocultures.

Our Aye Aye is being played by the incredible @chimpsteaparty - who also made many of the beautiful costumes for Pole to Pole.

Aye Ayes are only found in Madagascar, and are listed as Endangered on the IUCN red list, due to a mixture of habitat loss, and historical hunting.

The Puerto Rican Amazon is a large green parrot endemic to Puerto Rico. Its vibrant plumage plays an important role in its camouflage, but has also contributed to one of the primary reasons this gorgeous parrot is Critically Endangered on the IUCN red list - the illegal pet trade.

During the 1970s, there were only 13 Puerto Rican Amazon parrots left in the world. Now, there are over 500.

Through captive breeding and release programmes, these parrots have been recovering in numbers. There is hope for this magnificent bird yet.

This is a PSA that our world is becoming *less colourful* because of human activities

Earlier this month, a new study was published revealing that an increase in monocultures is causing butterflies to undergo discolouration.

In other words, as our forests and ecosystems become monochromatic monocultures, the butterflies which inhabit them are adapting to be duller in order to be better camouflaged.

After reading this new research, as well as some older research which explores how climate change is also causing butterflies to become less colourful - I was honestly, pretty devastated.

The fact this isn’t on the news - on the front of our screens - is shocking.
There is almost a degree of apathy towards this, and other environmental issues. And we can hardly be blamed for this: in a world which is fraying at the edges in every respect, it is overwhelming to know about how everything is going wrong all at once.

So, I created Fading Kaleidoscope.

A new #wildlifeartivism piece, reflecting both colour loss, and species loss, in butterflies (this particular species is a Heliconius butterfly). Using negative space, and both fading of colours and a transition to greyscale, I hope to communicate this frightening reality to a wider audience.

Genuinely forgot to post about the mural I did in June (!) for @foodfitnessflora “Pollinator Pathways” @backtobristol project !! 🐝🦋🪲🪰🐞

It was a joy working over three days to paint this very long mural in Bristol! My mural design celebrates the wildlife - particularly the pollinators - found in the south west, and was painted as part of the @communityrepaint project, as well as Pollinator Pathways - which looks at putting planters full of pollinator-friendly flowers around Bristol ❤️

Accidental chaotic moments include losing sven (many tears ensued, I did find him again 2 weeks later - covered in paint) 🦌, and accidentally pouring an entire palette of white paint all over me, my bag, and my phone 😅🫠 - and also just generally coming home every day coated in paint

Anyway! If you’re in the area, go and see it in person! There are also gorgeous murals by other amazing artists Chloe & Charlotte ✨

Spending the majority of the day in one of my favourite places, doing the thing I love most in the world (and feel very lucky to call my job) 🥰✨

An absolutely wonderful class for today’s wildlife artivism workshop with @oxford_if at @morethanadodo - one of the highlights was a girl getting so excited about #wildlifeartivism that she started creating her own piece inspired by the cheetah specimen, before I’d even introduced that being our next activity 🥰

Followed by some sketching I did in the backroom of some beautiful specimens ✨ particularly fond of this brown pelican

Owston’s Palm Civet

It looks like an elongated cat, but it’s actually part of the civet family (which means they have differences such as not being obligate carnivores, and producing musk).

It is also “vulnerable” on the @iucnred_list - primarily because of illegal hunting for the wildlife trade, meat, and traditional medicines.

Whilst researching the owston’s palm civet, I came across photos of the civets being prepared in markets. It sparked two different #wildlifeartivism responses:

The first is a civet on a spit. At first glance, the civet could simply be lying on a thin branch, but in closer inspection, the hairless legs which are becoming cooked meat, and the piercing of the abdomen by the spit, show this is not the case.

The second is a more graphic image - a civet being hung up before it is skinned for the bushmeat markets. Because it was a more graphic and distressing topic, I decided to strip the image down into my geometric style, with the only break from the straight lines being the blood at the top of the civet’s paw.

I honestly didn’t realise so many different species - including those we perhaps associate more commonly as being predators - are eaten, both legally and illegally, as part of markets.

So this duo I hope will act as a conversation point ❤️
