![Here’s the thing: I nearly didn’t apply to be on @btobirds’s youth advisory panel.
In early 2021 I joined a BTO webinar for international women’s day - and I was terrified. I was so frightened of interacting with the world of ornithology again, after being so utterly destroyed by it at 19.
But I sat in the webinar, and I found out about BTO Youth, for the first time since being involved with BTO since my teens. And I was curious.
When applications for YAP opened that summer, I agonised over whether to reply. I didn’t have a straightforward relationship with ornithology: I had panic attacks whilst on nature walks, collapsed in a heap when people raised their voices, and never mentioned my love of birds. When people would ask about my work with them, I’d close off & shut down - any idea of doing anything with birds, something I’d dreamed off as a child, was petrifying to me now.
But I applied, while sat on the staircase in a friend’s house. And then I was interviewed, whilst sat in my first flat in Bristol - the city I’d just moved to.
When I got accepted, something clicked into place - and the gears started turning again.
And the rest… is history.
But at 26, I’m now too old for YAP 👵
I know it’s not the end, it’s a transition into something new (I hope!). But I want to take the time to say how much I love this amazing group of young people & staff 🩵 there is something very special about a group of young people who love birds, and I am so, so happy I’ve been part of that for the past 4.5 years
The biggest thank yous to @fayenames - for taking a risk on me; to @emma_nature42 for encouraging my unhinged taskmaster shenanigans; to @samuelnature85 for the spoon 🥄 & @budding.birder for spoonie; to @katie.monkk for being my wonderful twin (and her cats 🐈); to @haydn.fox_ for being a level-headed bestie; to @meg.mccm for @charlie.allen57 & all of the times you’ve been for me in Brizzle; to @estherumsey18 for art chat & the love of Claudia 🧛♀️; to @arjun_dutta_photography_ for being as crap at texting as me; to @benji_matt for 🍷 & 🍞; to @animal_alias for keeping me up to date with the lingo… [1/2]
