FAQs

How do you come up with your art ideas?

It's a real mix, but with the wildlife artivism pieces in particular, there's normally quite a few levels of brainstorming, planning, and conceptualisation. It's very rare for me to have an idea and have it immediately good-to-go (but it does happen!). Mostly I think of my ideas when I'm on walks, or reading through books, or looking up papers - I always do my research before I start a piece too!

What's your favourite art piece, and why?

Probably 'When the Whale Sang' (2020) as it started my art journey, and put me on the route to becoming a professional creative conservationist and artist!

What's your job exactly?

I'm a multi-disciplinary creative conservationist, which is a bit of a mouthful - but it essentially means I work across lots of different art forms (art, teaching, animation, writing, poetry, film, photography, performance) to tell stories about the natural world and communicate science. I'm basically a very artistic scientist!

How did you become a Daler-Rowney Artist, and what does it involve?

I've been a Daler-Rowney Artist since the start of 2023! I got approached by the team, as they loved my wildlife art - particularly my wildlife artivism - and we went from there. My role involves being an official Ambassador for Daler-Rowney, promoting their products on my channel (as I use many for my work!), reviewing and testing new materials and products before they hit the shelves, doing some advertising campaigns and filming at their HQ, designs for new product launches... it's really varied, and I love it!

What's your favourite colour, and why?

Maybe either orange, pale blue, or deep burgundy - but I love working with a mix.

Can I work with you?

Potentially! I'm always on the look out for new projects to work on, and amazing people to collaborate with! However, if you're asking if you can work with me in my studio, that's unfortunately not possible, sorry!

Can I visit you at your studio / do you have an open studio?

Sadly no! If I ever do take part in an open studio day, this will be on my Instagram, so I'd suggest following me there for updates.

Do you take commissions?

I do! Please contact me with your ideas and specifications.

Can you be on my podcast/can I interview you?

Yes, absolutely! I love chatting about what I do, and sharing the creative conservation love around! Please drop me an email and we can sort something out!

What does being on a Youth Advisory Panel (YAP) mean?

I've been on the BTO's YAP since 2021, and it involves working together with a small group of young people to create and implement our Youth strategy, which sets out how we want to engage with young people, and get more people into nature. It's a strategic role, which involves lots of meetings, working groups, and chatter - but I absolutely love being part of it (and I'm so sad I have to leave when I turn 26!).

Where can I buy your art?

You can get in touch if there's a piece you've seen on my Instagram - or my website - that you like (although there's no guarantee I'll still have the piece, but if it's gone, I can do bespoke prints!). I periodically hold flash studio sales off of my Instagram, so if you follow me there, you'll see when those happen! There are prints, stickers, books, etc. all available on my shop - and otherwise, originals are best brought from me directly if you see me at a market, fair, or in the wild!

Please can I buy your whale?

No. Sorry :) but you can buy prints!

What are you working on now?

I'm always working on multiple things at once! Normally a mix of solo projects, commissions and projects for clients, and any doodles or creative content I feel like making! The biggest upcoming projects I'm working on are my hare book (slated for publication January 2027), Pole to Pole (a performative art piece showing November 2025), and a new collection of work I'm nicknaming 'Bodies'.

What's your favourite photo that you've taken, and why?

Either 'Dancing Hoverfly' (2010), because (similar to my whale art) it started me on the route of wildlife photography and merging the arts with science; or 'Catch me if you can' (2015), which I feel is a technically strong photo, which I still love the execution of!

What's your favourite thing to draw?

It varies massively depending on what mood I'm in! But I have a soft spot for drawing birds, any sort of wildlife artivism piece which features light pollution, and I also like the 'ugly animals' that are less common for people to draw! Oh, and I love drawing hares.

When is your next book coming out?

Currently, the next one (my hare book, publishing with Pen & Sword) is slated for a January 2027 publication.

How do you release your books?

Some of my books are self-published in partnership with an organisation, for example - 'I, me, moor' (2025) was published in partnership with Campaign for National Parks. Others are released in the traditional publishing route.

Do you have an agent?

No, it's just me! :)

What music do you listen to when you work?

A real mix. I have monthly Spotify playlists which I share in my newsletter (sign up here), and my ultimate go-to work playlist is this one.
