Wildlife artivism is where an artist communicates science through artistic means, with the aim of inciting change in thought or behaviour.

Wildlife artivism was founded by Martin Aveling in 2019.

Burnt Lifelines 🔥

The Pantanal in South America is the world’s largest continuous stretch of wetlands - in 2020, it recorded its most catastrophic fire season in 20 years, and in 2024, the wildfires returned again, with devastating affects.

During the peak of the wildfires, an estimated 440,000 hectares of wetland burned in 1 month, threatening not only the wildlife which calls the Pantanal home (some of which can be found nowhere else), but also destroying traditional lands, homes, and disrupting livelihoods of the people who live there.

A 2024 study by the World Weather Attribution demonstrated that anthropogenic warming caused by the burning of fossil fuels makes the wildfires seen in the Pantanal 40% more impactful, and 4-5 more likely.

This new #wildlifeartivism piece is my exploration of the devastation the Pantanal has seen over recent years. Instead of greens, browns, and blues - the wetland has become a scared landscape of oranges, yellows, and reds, from which smoke rips up alongside the empty hollows of water.

These incredible seabirds are monogamous, meaning they mate for life, so when one mate dies, it can have additional fatal consequences for the chick the pair raise together.

I wanted to create a #wildlifeartivism piece exploring this idea of how plastic pollution - represented by the beer rings & bubble-wrap prints - is partially responsible for the wandering albatross’s current “vulnerable” IUCN status. The beer rings are a somewhat macabre play on the romantic rings we hand out during wedding vows, with the idea that this pair are doomed for a death together.

A bit of a sad piece, but there were lots of layers that went into it, so I hope you like it. 🩵

I honestly can’t believe we’re already wrapping up 2024, but here we are.

To say it’s been an insane year is an understatement; it’s been challenging & pushed me to my limits - but it’s also set me free & let me be more confident, both in my work, and in general.

My most popular work this year (collage 1) includes “A Girl & Birds”, my project with @btobirds which launched in August. My post alone has had almost 16k views, and I’m so heartened to see it opening up an important conversation 🩵

You also liked my film produced with @wader.quest - The Lost Songstress - and my recent album art for @stornowayband, as well as lots of love for my workshops (THANK YOU!!! 🧡)

Collage 2 has some of my personal favourites from this year - various doodles (I found it very hard to choose!), as well as my fav #longboi Charcoal, which sold at @mallgalleries this year as part of @dswfwildlifeart’s #wildlifeartistoftheyear 🌲

I’m continuing my new #wildlifeartivism x urban nature series with a delve into urban foxes! 🦊

With more and more of us living in cities, our wildlife adapts and cohabits with us - one of the most successful (and most controversial) is the red fox.

The colours in this piece are depicting traffic and road collisions; and a more cubism-inspired approach to layering the buildings and distorting perspective to highlight feeling small in these urban jungles.

I’m continuing my new #wildlifeartivism x urban nature series with a delve into urban foxes! 🦊

With more and more of us living in cities, our wildlife adapts and cohabits with us - one of the most successful (and most controversial) is the red fox.

The colours in this piece are depicting traffic and road collisions; and a more cubism-inspired approach to layering the buildings and distorting perspective to highlight feeling small in these urban jungles.

I’m incredibly out of the way of sharing my poetry - but last weekend, I did a poetry reading for @stoprosebankbristol; mostly poems from Multi-coloured Ghost Towns, but a few new ones too.

So, I thought I’d share a couple of new poems! ✨

The first, “2 minute break (what it’s like)”, was written earlier this year, exploring the intensity of my brain as it whirs away.

The second, “The thing about anxiety”, can be read both forwards and backwards (something I’ve been playing around with for a while!) and is another exploration of a racing, anxious mind & its relationship with the natural world.

There’s a lot of turbulence today, and I’m so angry, frustrated, and sad with it all.

@_wilderskies_ recently asked me what I do when in the face of anxiety and feeling small; and the answer is - create.

I write, I draw, I sketch, I imagine and dream and MAKE. We can’t lose hope now, little ripples will make waves - and we can fight still.

Right now I’m mostly feeling intense déjà-vu - feeling the same I felt 8 years ago, but much more strongly.

This piece is part of a new series of artworks looking at things in places they’re not meant to be. This one is a whale, specifically a northern bottlenose whale, in the Thames.

For the next 4 weeks, I’m going to run weekly (mostly Wednesdays!) wildlife art workshops online - the aim is to get people comfortable with making some squiggles, scribbles, shapes, and sketches - and along the way you’ll create some really cool wildlife art too! 🥰

Parakeets are one of several species that have come to call the UK home in recent years, but are originally non-native species from elsewhere. These species often bring vibrancy and diversity to our cities, urban spaces, and rural landscapes - yet they also remain controversial additions.

With my latest #wildlifeartivism piece, I want to make you think about how you perceive non-native species, such as the parakeet.

The parakeet appears lonely and lost in the midst of a colourless city - it offers a splash of brightness; or perhaps it doesn’t blend in as it should.

Working on this piece has been so, so much fun. It’s a different style, but something that feels natural based on my sketches I do when I’m out and about - and it definitely felt like the right style for this subject matter!

Reedling

Early September, my Dad & I went to one of our local nature reserves. He’s a wildlife photographer too, so we often go together with the aim of seeing what we’ll stumble across while exploring a mosaic of habitats - and this lil trip was no different.

I think I last saw bearded tits in 2015. It’s the only other time I’ve seen them, and I lost all the photos I got as a teenager when our hard drive corrupted; so going back almost 10 (!!) years later & having one of the most magical encounters with these stunning little birds yet, was very special indeed.

There were about 30-40 birds in the flock, and they were pinging all over the place, but I really wanted to get some more artistic shots of them, hiding in the reeds.

I absolutely love how this one turned out - the softness of the male bearded tit as he perches, temporarily paused before he pings off amongst the reeds again; and the textures of the reeds - their sharp shadows emphasised in black and white.

Reedling

Early September, my Dad & I went to one of our local nature reserves. He’s a wildlife photographer too, so we often go together with the aim of seeing what we’ll stumble across while exploring a mosaic of habitats - and this lil trip was no different.

I think I last saw bearded tits in 2015. It’s the only other time I’ve seen them, and I lost all the photos I got as a teenager when our hard drive corrupted; so going back almost 10 (!!) years later & having one of the most magical encounters with these stunning little birds yet, was very special indeed.

There were about 30-40 birds in the flock, and they were pinging all over the place, but I really wanted to get some more artistic shots of them, hiding in the reeds.

I absolutely love how this one turned out - the softness of the male bearded tit as he perches, temporarily paused before he pings off amongst the reeds again; and the textures of the reeds - their sharp shadows emphasised in black and white.

Progress is progress

This lil gorilla mum & her baby are proving a lot of fun to work on - it’s another experiment, where I’m working in a mix of media & playing around with colours and shapes with the hopes of showing the closeness between these two gorillas!

Gorillas are such caring parents, so this is something I really want to get across - from an emotional perspective - in this piece.

Hidden / Between the gaps

One of my local areas at home is full of overgrown hedges and tiny, hidden paths through brambles. It always feels magical whenever I explore it - and when I was there in early autumn, this flock of juvenile Reed buntings were darting and peeping amongst the leaves.

I spent ages following them, quietly waiting within the hedge for them to flutter into the gaps in between.

This is one of my favourite photos from the evening - the soft light and framing making the bunting feel free & hopeful.
